The gaping hole amid Schmalkalden's manicured lawns is nearly 65 feet deep and 100 feet in diameter. Amazingly, no one was hurt, though 25 people were evacuated when the earth gave way Monday.
One resident, Wolfgang Peter, said the deafening sound of the earth moving woke him up early in the morning. "First I heard the rushing of water, and then it sounded as if a dozen gravel trucks were being emptied," Peter told the German newspaper
